Lando Norris secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix after beating Mercedes driver George Russell in a dramatic qualifying session disrupted by late rain.

The McLaren driver finished just 0.102 seconds ahead of Russell as raindrops began appearing on drivers’ visors during the final stages of qualifying.

With conditions changing rapidly, drivers were forced to complete their final flying laps earlier than usual. The late shower created a tense battle for the front of the grid, with only a few hundredths of a second separating several of the leading drivers.

Norris Holds Off Russell for Pole

Norris had already established himself at the front during the opening runs of the final qualifying session and managed to maintain his advantage when the weather began to deteriorate.

Russell mounted a strong challenge for pole but ultimately fell short by just over a tenth of a second.

The result gives Norris a crucial front-row advantage ahead of the race and puts McLaren in a strong position as the team looks to challenge at the Dutch circuit.

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli added further drama to the final moments of qualifying.

The Italian was the first of the leading drivers to improve on his final attempt, temporarily moving to the top of the timing sheets.

However, his advantage lasted only briefly.

Norris responded with a faster lap to reclaim first place before Russell also moved ahead of Antonelli. The Mercedes driver eventually secured second, leaving Antonelli in third.

Antonelli finished only 0.031 seconds behind Russell, highlighting just how close the battle for the front of the grid had become.

He was also only 0.009 seconds ahead of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri, who qualified fourth.

The tiny gaps between the leading drivers underline how important timing became as rain began to affect the circuit.

With track conditions changing by the minute, even a small delay could have made a significant difference to the final qualifying order.

The late shower added another layer of uncertainty to an already competitive session.

Drivers had initially been preparing to make their final qualifying attempts under normal conditions, but the appearance of rain forced teams to reconsider their strategies.

Norris and the other frontrunners completed their laps before the rain became a more significant factor, allowing them to post competitive times while the circuit was still relatively quick.

The unpredictable conditions meant that qualifying became less about simply finding the fastest lap and more about choosing exactly when to take it.

Norris will now start the Dutch Grand Prix from pole position, with Russell alongside him on the front row.

Antonelli’s third-place result puts him directly ahead of Piastri, setting up a potentially intense battle between Mercedes and McLaren from the opening lap.

The narrow gaps between the four leading drivers suggest that the race could be closely contested, particularly if weather conditions remain unpredictable.

For Norris, however, the immediate priority will be converting his qualifying advantage into a strong race result after producing a perfectly timed lap when it mattered most.
