PM Shehbaz Sharif Heads to New York for High-Stakes UNGA Diplomacy
Pakistan PM to address UN General Assembly on September 25; meetings with world leaders, UN chief and high-level diplomatic engagements expected as regional tensions dominate global agenda

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is preparing for a major diplomatic visit to the United States, where he will lead Pakistan’s delegation to the high-level segment of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Prime Minister arrived in London on Thursday for a brief stopover and is expected to proceed to the United States over the weekend. He will be accompanied during the New York leg of his visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, federal ministers and senior government officials.
At the center of the Prime Minister’s visit will be his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 25, where he is expected to present Pakistan’s position on major regional and international developments at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Prime Minister Sharif will emphasize dialogue, diplomacy, restraint and the peaceful settlement of disputes as essential principles for addressing conflicts confronting the international community.
His address is expected to cover sustainable development, climate change, counterterrorism, Islamophobia, global economic challenges, reform of the United Nations and the concerns of the Global South.
Pakistan is also expected to draw international attention to the situations in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine, while reiterating its support for diplomatic solutions to international disputes.
Busy Diplomatic Schedule in New York
Beyond his General Assembly address, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to maintain an extensive diplomatic schedule on the sidelines of the UN gathering.
The Foreign Office has confirmed that the Prime Minister will participate in a number of high-level events and hold bilateral meetings with world leaders. He is also scheduled to engage with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
These meetings are expected to provide Pakistan with an important diplomatic platform to discuss bilateral relations, regional security, economic cooperation and major international developments.
The complete list and precise timings of the Prime Minister’s bilateral meetings have not yet been officially announced, meaning additional engagements could be confirmed as the high-level week approaches.
Trump Engagement in Focus
Considerable attention is also expected to focus on the Prime Minister’s interaction with U.S. President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly gathering.
Media reports have indicated that Prime Minister Sharif could meet President Trump in New York around September 23. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are also expected to host a reception for visiting heads of state and government during the UNGA high-level week.
However, the precise format and agenda of any separate Trump-Shehbaz meeting should be treated as subject to official confirmation.
Any substantive engagement between the two leaders would take place against the backdrop of important developments in Pakistan-U.S. relations and could provide an opportunity for discussions on regional security, counterterrorism, economic and trade cooperation and wider geopolitical developments.
Middle East Crisis Expected to Dominate Diplomacy
The escalating situation in the Middle East is likely to be one of the defining issues of this year’s General Assembly.
Pakistan is expected to emphasize diplomatic engagement and de-escalation amid tensions involving the United States and Iran and the wider instability affecting the Middle East.
Islamabad is likely to reiterate its position that prolonged military confrontation carries serious consequences for regional stability and the global economy, particularly given Pakistan’s geographical proximity to the Gulf and its economic and security interests in the region.
The Palestine issue is also expected to remain prominent during the Prime Minister’s engagements in New York, alongside discussions on broader peace and security challenges.
Pakistan’s Economic and Diplomatic Priorities
The visit will also provide Islamabad with an opportunity to advance its broader economic diplomacy.
Pakistan has increasingly sought to connect its foreign policy with trade, investment, development and international economic cooperation. Meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly could therefore provide opportunities to highlight Pakistan’s economic priorities and strengthen engagement with international partners.
Prime Minister Sharif is also expected to use the UN platform to underline Pakistan’s role as a member of the UN Security Council and reaffirm Islamabad’s commitment to the UN Charter, multilateralism, conflict prevention and international cooperation.
Return Expected by September 27 or 28
Following the completion of his engagements in New York, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to begin his return journey, with current reports indicating that he could arrive back in Pakistan on September 27 or 28.
A brief stopover in London for approximately one or two days is also being reported as part of the return journey.
The precise return schedule, like some of the bilateral engagements in New York, remains subject to change as diplomatic meetings continue to be finalized.
With wars and geopolitical tensions dominating the international agenda, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit places Pakistan at the center of an intensive week of multilateral diplomacy.
From his September 25 address to the United Nations General Assembly to meetings with world leaders and senior UN officials, Islamabad will seek to use the New York gathering to present Pakistan’s positions on peace and security, Palestine and Kashmir, economic cooperation, climate challenges and reform of the international system.
