BUENOS AIRES: Argentina has pushed back against widespread criticism following its 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, after players and fans came under fire over their conduct during the championship match.
The defending champions faced accusations of poor sportsmanship and overly aggressive play, with several commentators describing Argentina as the tournament’s “villains” after a tense and physical final.
Critics Slam Argentina’s Conduct
The World Cup final was marked by frequent fouls, heated confrontations, and emotional exchanges between players. Critics also highlighted Argentina’s players turning away during Spain’s trophy presentation, a gesture that sparked debate across social media and international media outlets.
Several football analysts described Argentina’s approach as overly physical, while some questioned the team’s discipline throughout the tournament.
Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson was among public figures who criticized the behavior of some Argentina supporters, while allegations of racist incidents involving sections of the fan base also circulated during the competition.

Leo Simone, a lawyer from near Buenos Aires, said Argentina has long been misunderstood on the international stage.

His wife echoed the sentiment, arguing that Argentina’s confidence is frequently mistaken for disrespect.
Supporters Stand Behind Their Team
Thousands of fans gathered outside Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires to welcome the national team home despite the heartbreaking defeat.
Among them was Maximiliano Heredia, a 35-year-old construction worker, who said criticism of Argentina is nothing new.
“We’ve always been criticized, and we’re used to it. But our players always give everything for the country,” he said.
