Pakistani-American humanitarian receives official recognition in Houston as Mayor Whitmire announces plans to visit Pakistan.
HOUSTON: Houston Mayor John Whitmire has honored Pakistani-American humanitarian Muhammad Saeed Sheikh after he was awarded Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Khidmat (Star of Service), recognizing his decades of dedication to humanitarian work and community development.
The recognition ceremony was organized by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston in collaboration with the Houston-Karachi Sister City Association, drawing prominent community leaders, elected officials, business executives and members of the Pakistani-American community.
Mayor Whitmire Applauds Lifelong Community Service
Speaking at the event, Mayor Whitmire congratulated Muhammad Saeed Sheikh on receiving one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors and praised his unwavering commitment to serving communities in both Pakistan and the United States.
The mayor thanked President Asif Ali Zardari for recognizing Sheikh’s humanitarian contributions and described him as an individual whose decades of volunteerism have positively impacted thousands of lives.
“He has spent more than 40 years helping people without discrimination and has become a symbol of compassion and public service,” Whitmire said.
Houston Declares ‘Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day’
To mark the occasion, Mayor Whitmire presented an official City of Houston Proclamation, declaring July 21, 2026, as “Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day.”
The proclamation recognizes Sheikh’s outstanding humanitarian achievements, civic leadership and his continued efforts to strengthen friendship, understanding and cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.
Mayor Plans Official Visit to Pakistan
During his address, Mayor Whitmire also revealed that he intends to visit Pakistan during his second term as Houston mayor.
He said the trip would help deepen relations between Houston and Pakistan by promoting stronger cooperation in business, culture and community engagement.
Community Leaders Pay Tribute
Prominent Pakistani-American businessman Syed Javed Anwar described Sheikh as a respected humanitarian who has dedicated his life to serving others with sincerity and humility.
He said the Sitara-e-Khidmat was a fitting recognition for an individual who has quietly worked for the welfare of communities for more than four decades.
Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston, Aftab Chaudhry, also praised Sheikh’s achievements, saying his humanitarian work reflects the positive role of overseas Pakistanis in strengthening Pakistan’s global image.
He added that the national honor is a matter of pride for the entire Pakistani-American community.
Sheikh Credits Community Support
Accepting the recognition, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh expressed gratitude to the Government of Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari, the Consulate General of Pakistan, Mayor Whitmire and everyone who had supported his humanitarian mission.
He said the award belonged to the entire community rather than to any one individual.
“This recognition is a tribute to every volunteer, supporter and friend who stood with me throughout this journey,” Sheikh said.
He paid special tribute to Syed Javed Anwar, acknowledging his consistent support for numerous humanitarian initiatives over the years.
The ceremony concluded with community members celebrating Sheikh’s remarkable legacy of service and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening humanitarian cooperation and the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and the United States.
