Plane Crash in India Kills Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Four Others

A chartered plane crashed during an emergency landing on the morning of January 28, 2026, in Baramati, Pune district, Maharashtra, India, killing Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar along with all five people on board the aircraft, according to Indian media. The plane was traveling from Mumbai to Baramati, where Ajit Pawar was scheduled to attend local political and election-related events. During landing, the plane suddenly lost control, struck the ground near the runway, and caught fire, resulting in the immediate death of everyone on board.
According to media reports, the passengers included Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, two close associates, and two crew members, including the pilot and co-pilot. Rescue teams responded immediately, but due to the intensity of the fire and explosions, no one could be saved, and all five fatalities were confirmed at the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported that the plane was flying unusually low during landing, and upon hitting the ground, a loud explosion occurred, followed by flames rising within moments. Several locals said multiple explosions were heard after the crash, creating panic in the area and making it difficult for rescue teams to reach the wreckage.
Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and relevant investigative authorities stated that the exact cause of the crash is not yet known. Investigations are underway examining the plane’s technical condition, weather, pilot reports, air traffic control communications, and runway conditions. Authorities have said that the black box and other evidence will be analyzed to determine the cause of the crash.
The sudden death of Ajit Pawar has caused a profound shock across Maharashtra and India. Political leaders have expressed deep sorrow, and the state government has announced official mourning and condolence measures. Ajit Pawar was considered an influential and experienced political leader in Maharashtra, and his death is seen as a significant blow to state politics.
