Sri Lanka: As the country continues to battle the destruction caused by a severe cyclone and heavy rains, Pakistan has stepped forward with crucial humanitarian support. Under the directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan dispatched a high-level military search and rescue team to bolster Sri Lanka’s emergency relief operations.
According to local civil society voices, including humanitarian groups, there were initial concerns when India reportedly restricted the use of its airspace for the relief mission, a move that drew significant international attention. Following diplomatic pressure and appeals from humanitarian networks, the restriction was later lifted, allowing the Pakistani rescue team to proceed with its mission without delay.
Prominent Sri Lankan human rights advocate Rasik Safeela Rasmiya, leader of the International Human Rights Movement for Women and Youth Empowerment, strongly praised Pakistan’s timely assistance. She expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and commended the dedication of the military rescue personnel, calling Pakistan’s gesture “a powerful example of regional solidarity and humanity.”
Rasmiya’s acknowledgment has gained wide support, highlighting the importance of cross-border cooperation during national emergencies and reaffirming the value of humanitarian collaboration in South Asia.
