NEW YORK: Olympic champion Noah Lyles delivered another statement performance by winning his third United States men’s 100-meter title with a world-leading time of 9.79 seconds at the US Track and Field Championships on Friday.
The 29-year-old sprinter recovered from a slow start before unleashing his trademark finishing speed over the final meters to comfortably secure victory at Icahn Stadium in New York City.
Noah Lyles Produces Season’s Fastest 100m Time
Despite trailing early in the race, Lyles accelerated powerfully over the closing stages to leave his rivals behind and register the fastest 100-meter time recorded anywhere in the world this season.
Veteran Ronnie Baker finished second in 9.88 seconds, narrowly edging Kenny Bednarek, who was also timed at 9.88 but placed third after a photo finish. Former world champion Christian Coleman settled for fourth place in 9.93 seconds.
Speaking after the race, Lyles said he never doubted his ability to recover after a slow reaction.
“In my head, the distance was already made up,” Lyles said. “My coach always tells me not to let anyone get away. Once I saw where Christian was, I knew it was time to finish strong.”
The winning performance matched Lyles’ personal best, which he also ran while claiming Olympic gold at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It also surpassed the previous world-leading mark of 9.82 seconds, set by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville earlier this year.
Sha’Carri Richardson Returns to Winning Ways
In the women’s 100-meter final, Sha’Carri Richardson produced one of her strongest performances in recent months by capturing her third US national title.
The 2023 world champion crossed the finish line in 10.77 seconds, comfortably ahead of training partner Kayla White, who claimed second place in 10.90 seconds. Tamari Davis completed the podium with a time of 11.00 seconds.
Richardson described the victory as an emotional milestone after a challenging 2025 campaign.
“It feels amazing to be healthy again—mentally, physically and emotionally,” Richardson said. “Everything my coach and I have been working toward is finally coming together.”
Lyles Turns Attention to 200m Challenge
Fresh from his dominant 100-meter victory, Lyles will return to the track on Saturday to compete in the 200-meter heats, an event where he has also enjoyed tremendous international success.

Seventeen-year-old middle-distance sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus continued his impressive breakthrough season by advancing to the men’s 800-meter final.
The rising American star won his qualifying heat in 1:45.83, recording the third-fastest time of the opening round.
However, former world champion Donovan Brazier failed to progress after missing out on qualification.
