British retail giant Frasers Group has increased its financial exposure in luxury fashion house Burberry Group, raising its interest to 4.16%, according to a regulatory filing released by the UK-based company on Tuesday.

The latest filing shows that Frasers, which is controlled by billionaire Mike Ashley, has steadily expanded its position in Burberry over the past few days. The retailer previously held a 3.05% stake as of July 24, but has now increased its exposure by expanding its position through sold put options linked to Burberry shares.

Unlike a traditional share purchase, Frasers’ entire holding is currently structured through sold put options rather than direct ownership of Burberry stock. The position represents approximately 15 million voting rights, making Frasers the third-largest shareholder in the British luxury brand, according to LSEG data.

The two largest shareholders in Burberry remain MFS Investment Management and BlackRock Investment Management (UK) Ltd.

Frasers has not publicly commented on the increased investment. The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment regarding its strategy or future plans for the luxury fashion house.

Earlier this month, Frasers declined to issue its financial outlook for fiscal year 2027, citing uncertainty surrounding ongoing takeover bids involving German fashion company Hugo Boss and Australian footwear retailer Accent Group. The company said these developments made it difficult to provide an accurate forecast for the coming year.

Meanwhile, Burberry recently reported that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have negatively affected tourist spending across Europe. Despite these challenges, the luxury brand recorded strong sales growth during the April–June quarter, driven by robust demand in the United States and China.

Investors responded positively to the developments, with Burberry shares closing approximately 5% higher, while Frasers Group shares gained 2.5% by the end of Tuesday’s trading session.

The increased investment highlights Frasers’ continued interest in expanding its presence within the global luxury retail sector, even as the industry faces economic uncertainty and shifting consumer spending patterns.
