Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been transferred back to prison after undergoing a medical examination at a hospital in Islamabad, where doctors declared him “medically fit.”

Khan was examined by a team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician, Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said.

The medical examination was carried out following an order from the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which directed authorities on Tuesday to take Khan to a hospital within 48 hours after concerns were raised about his health.

Supreme Court Orders Medical Examination of Imran Khan

The court’s decision represented one of the most significant forms of relief Khan has received since his imprisonment in 2023 in connection with corruption cases.

Khan has rejected the allegations against him and has repeatedly claimed that the cases are politically motivated.

In addition to ordering a medical examination, the Supreme Court also directed that Khan be allowed to meet members of his family. He had reportedly been unable to see relatives for several months.

His sister, Azma Khan, visited him in prison on Tuesday night and, according to Tarar, remained present throughout the various stages of his medical examination on Thursday night.

The medical assessment included examinations by specialists in different fields, with authorities saying Khan was fit to return to prison after the evaluation.

Security was significantly increased around Shifa International Hospital during Khan’s medical examination.

Police barriers, officers and police vehicles were deployed around the facility, while armoured vehicles were also seen patrolling the area.

Traffic and parked vehicles near the hospital were cleared as authorities maintained tight security around the premises.

Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has frequently described legal actions against its founder as politically motivated. However, the party has not publicly commented on speculation that the Supreme Court’s latest intervention could be linked to political developments behind the scenes.

Khan’s return to prison comes as his legal battles continue, while questions surrounding his health, family access and future court proceedings remain closely watched in Pakistan.

For now, authorities have confirmed that the former prime minister was medically cleared following his hospital examination and has been returned to custody.
