An effective and important dialogue was held at Sahiwal Arts Council regarding the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was organized with the joint efforts of the “Awaaz Do” program and LLP. Women, disabled people and representatives of related organizations participated in this dialogue and a comprehensive discussion was held on the challenges related to disability, necessary facilities and future requirements. On this occasion, Director Arts Council Dr. Riaz Hamdani said in his address that this day is not just a reminder but a moment of renewal of resolve. Punjab Arts Council always stands with special people to provide opportunities for expression, ability and recognition. We have to prioritize changing attitudes and providing opportunities so that their capabilities can be included in social development. Assistant Commissioner Sahiwal Maham Wahid expressed his views and said that persons with disabilities are active citizens of the society and it is the responsibility of the state to provide them with dignified and safe opportunities. Not only legislation but also practical measures and positive attitudes become the source of real change. We need to strengthen the process of inclusion and facilitation more than sympathy. The participants also expressed that of course the Punjab government is taking important steps for the convenience and welfare of persons with disabilities and there is significant progress at various stages of provision of facilities. However, further improvement is possible if the process of facilitation in important areas like education, health, assistive devices, obtaining registration, access to government buildings and employment opportunities is made more effective and efficient. In this regard, changing attitudes at the social level is also of fundamental importance. The program was attended by Dr. Ahmar Zulfiqar, Regional Director, Allama Iqbal Open University, Muhammad Shafiq and Madam Sajida, Assistant Directors, Social Welfare, Social Welfare Officer Syed Ali Tahir Shirazi, Madam Naghmana from Sahiwal Chamber of Commerce, Madam Sidra, Psychologist, School of Special Education, and various government institutions, social organizations, women, and people with disabilities.
