Prof. Shahid Malik Warns White Coats May Spread Infections, Urges Urgent Government Review
The President of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Lahore, Prof. Shahid Malik, has stated that white coats and white overalls worn by doctors in hospitals are increasingly becoming a significant source of infection transmission, posing risks of disease spread among patients.
In a statement issued here, he said that in many hospitals, used white coats and overalls are often hung in wards and offices and later reused across different departments. Although these garments may appear clean, they effectively act as carriers of germs from one patient to another, which is against the fundamental principles of infection control.

He urged the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Chief Minister of Punjab to take immediate notice of the matter and review the decision regarding mandatory use of white coats and overalls. He also recommended forming a committee comprising infection control experts, senior clinicians, and relevant specialists to develop practical, evidence-based recommendations.

He emphasized that safeguarding human lives must remain the top priority and that all measures contributing to the spread of infections in hospitals should be withdrawn immediately to ensure safe and quality healthcare services.
