
Sylvester Turner, Former Houston Mayor and U.S. Congressman, Passes Away at 70
Houston, TX-The city of Houston and the metropolitan mourning loss of Sylvester Turner, former longtime mayor, Texas state representative, and just-elected United States Congressman for Texas’s newly configured 18th district, who died at the age of 70. Turner was a well-known personality in the political circles, committed all his life to the betterment of public service through economic development, disaster recovery, and community betterment. His loss meant the end of a career that lasted over decades and left an eternal mark on Houston and beyond.

A Life of Dedication and Public Service
Turner was born September 27, 1954, in Houston’s Acres Homes area. Born to a humble family with an African American mother and Mexican father, he was the sixth of nine children. His exceptional academic ability earned him the title of valedictorian, allowing him to pursue an undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Houston. He graduated with a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, laying the foundation for his career in law and politics.
Turner was initially elected into the Texas House of Representatives in 1989 and served there for 27 years. Turner emerged as a critical figure in developing policies on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development; during those years, he earned respect from both sides of the aisle.
Turner was elected the 62nd mayor of Houston in 2015, assuming office in January 2016. During his two terms, distinguished leadership was rendered by him, particularly in times of crisis such as during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. His undertaking of disaster relief, improvements in infrastructure all across the city, and active pursuit of affordable housing launched projects that attest to his steadfast commitment to the people of Houston.

Son of a crisis manager, Turner was a futuristic leader. He was the first to launch Houston’s pioneering Climate Action Plan towards carbon neutrality by 2050, and worked on modernizing the infrastructure of the city. The administration was also dedicated to the promotion of economic development along investment attraction with improving public transportation systems for its people.
Following the completion of his term as mayor in 2024, Turner was elected to the U.S. House, Texas’ 18th congressional district, succeeding Sheila Jackson Lee. Here, Turner served for an all-too-brief period but went on to be a staunch advocate for Houston through his work in Congress, which focused on health care, disaster preparedness, and community development policies.
A Courageous Battle with Cancer
Turner became public in 2022 about his osteosarcoma, which is a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer that had affected his jaw. After surgery and radiation therapy, he carried on his public work with such determination and spirit. His efforts and commitment continued on to the very end of his days, with his very last public appearance at President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, just hours prior to his death.
