Houston, TX – The city of Houston and the nation are mourning the loss of Sylvester Turner, former Houston mayor, Texas state representative, and U.S. Congressman, who passed away at the age of 70. A dedicated public servant, Turner’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Houston and beyond.
A Lifetime of Public Service
Born on September 27, 1954, in Acres Homes, Houston, Turner overcame humble beginnings to become a towering figure in Texas politics. After graduating from the University of Houston and earning a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, he served in the Texas House of Representatives for 27 years.
Elected Houston’s 62nd mayor in 2015, Turner led the city through Hurricane Harvey and championed infrastructure improvements, economic development, and climate initiatives. After completing his term in 2024, he was elected U.S. Representative for Texas’ 18th congressional district, succeeding Sheila Jackson Lee.
A Battle with Cancer and an Unwavering Spirit
Turner publicly revealed his osteosarcoma diagnosis in 2022, yet remained active in public service. His final public appearance was at President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, just hours before his passing.
