Senate Refers Journalist Mistreatment Case to Interior Committee

Reported by Mohammad Amin Islamabad

Islamabad, July 15 — The Senate has referred the case of journalist Tareq Warraich and Naeem Minhas’s illegal detention by Rawalpindi Police to its Standing Committee on Interior. The Parliamentary Reporters Association (PRA) staged a walkout from the Senate press gallery, protesting the abusive behavior of police. Senators Irfan Siddiqui, Nasir Butt, and others met journalists and assured full support. PRA condemned the police’s “thuggery” and demanded action. Despite opposition from State Minister Talal Chaudhry, the Chairman directed the committee to investigate. PRA President Usman Khan said journalists won’t tolerate such acts and will continue their fight for press freedom.
