Mark Carney Re-elected as Prime Minister of Canada
As of April 29, 2025, Mark Carney is the newly elected Prime Minister of Canada. He led the Liberal Party to victory in the federal election held on April 28. The Liberals won 168 seats, forming a minority government just short of a majority. The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, secured 133 seats, but Poilievre lost his own riding and has vowed to remain as leader. Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party faced a major defeat, winning only 5 seats, and Singh also lost his seat.
Mark Carney’s win marks a dramatic political shift, especially after the Liberals were trailing in polls earlier in the year. Rising tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump played a major role in rallying Canadian voters around national unity and sovereignty. In his victory speech, Carney promised to defend Canada’s independence and boost ties with Europe and Asia. He is expected to announce his cabinet soon as he begins forming the new government.
