Commissioner Dr. Asif Tufail Highlights Society’s Shared Role in Environmental Protection at Sahiwal Literary and Cultural Conference
Commissioner Sahiwal Division Dr. Asif Tufail has said that the Punjab government is taking strong steps to control environmental pollution and work is underway on projects worth crores of rupees for this purpose. He stressed that protecting the environment is not the responsibility of any single institution or individual but the joint responsibility of the entire society. He was addressing the inaugural session of the two-day Sahiwal Literary and Cultural Conference organized by the Sahiwal Arts Council, titled “Environment, Literature and Culture: Searching for a New Dialogue”. Commissioner Dr. Asif Tufail said that the Punjab government is following environment-friendly policies. The launch of electric buses, installation of waste water treatment plants and various projects to reduce air pollution are important links in this chain. He said that along with government measures for environmental improvement, public awareness is also indispensable. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Dr. Najeeb Jamal of Islamia University Bahawalpur, former Director General Urdu Science Board Lahore Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, Commandant Punjab Prison Staff Training College Sahiwal Malik Shaukat Feroz Awan, renowned writer and intellectual Professor Dr. Rosh Nadeem, Director Public Relations Muhammad Aqeel Ashfaq and the host of the event, Director Sahiwal Arts Council Dr. Syed Riaz Hamdani, writers and intellectuals from all over the country, and other esteemed personalities. The event was moderated by Assistant Professor, Department of Urdu, Government Graduate College Sahiwal Dr. Hina Jamshed. Director Sahiwal Arts Council Dr. Syed Riaz Hamdani welcomed the participants and while explaining the aims and objectives of the conference, said that promoting academic and intellectual dialogue in the context of global environmental crisis and climate change is the need of the hour. An exhibition of environmentally conscious artworks by young artists, handicraft stalls decorated with eco-friendly cultural items and scientific projects were also organized on the occasion of the conference. Students from various schools presented tableaux on the harmful effects of environmental pollution on human health, which received great appreciation from the audience. The aim of the conference is to highlight the interrelationship between environment, literature and culture and lay the foundation for a positive and constructive dialogue so that the path of a better and cleaner environment can be paved for future generations.
