HONG KONG: Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) companies are rapidly expanding their global presence as businesses and technology professionals in the United States increasingly adopt their advanced, lower-cost AI models for everyday tasks.
The growing popularity of Chinese AI platforms highlights intensifying competition in the global artificial intelligence industry, where affordability and performance are becoming key factors for users and enterprises alike.
One notable adopter is Raffi Krikorian, Chief Technology Officer at Mozilla, the organization behind the Firefox web browser.
Krikorian said he switched to Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 shortly after its release and now relies on it for many of his daily work tasks.
According to him, the chatbot feels faster and more responsive than some premium AI assistants currently available in the market.
“It just seems snappier,” Krikorian said while comparing Kimi K3 with Anthropic’s Claude Fable, one of the leading AI models developed in San Francisco.
Before moving to Kimi K3, he had also been using Z.ai’s GLM-5.2, another Chinese AI model, for routine activities such as managing emails, calendars, and documents.
Chinese AI developers are steadily challenging the dominance of American technology companies by offering highly capable models at significantly lower operating costs.
Industry experts say these AI systems are becoming increasingly attractive for businesses seeking powerful language models without paying premium subscription fees.
As performance improves, Chinese companies are narrowing the technological gap with leading US AI developers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta.
The appeal of Chinese AI is extending beyond individual users to major corporations.
US-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is among the companies reportedly adopting Chinese AI models to reduce operational expenses while maintaining productivity.
Lower pricing has become a major competitive advantage as organizations increasingly integrate generative AI into customer service, software development, content creation, and administrative workflows.
The rapid adoption of Chinese AI models signals a new phase in the global artificial intelligence race.
While American firms continue leading in research and commercial deployment, Chinese startups are gaining recognition by delivering efficient, high-performing AI systems at lower costs.
Analysts believe the competition will accelerate innovation across the AI industry while giving businesses and consumers more choices than ever before.
As Chinese AI platforms continue improving their capabilities, experts expect their global market share to expand, particularly among cost-conscious enterprises looking for reliable alternatives to premium Western AI services.
