Governor KP Assures Support for Reforming Outdated Christian Personal Laws
Minority delegation urges revision of 153-year-old marriage and divorce laws during meeting with Faisal Karim Kundi
Faisalabad (Mian Iftikhar Ahmad): A representative delegation of Pakistan’s minority community met Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi to discuss the need for reforms in the Christian marriage, divorce, and other personal laws, many of which have remained unchanged for more than 153 years.
The delegation highlighted that several laws governing Christian family matters date back to 1859 and no longer meet the legal and social requirements of present-day Pakistan. It urged the government to review and update these laws in consultation with relevant stakeholders to ensure equal access to justice and the protection of constitutional rights.
Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly Anthony Naveed, Atif Jameel Pagan, Romana Bashir, and Haroon Sial Gill were also present during the meeting. The delegation included journalists, lawyers, and civil society representatives from Faisalabad and various other cities across the country.
The participants briefed the Governor on the legal and family-related challenges faced by members of the Christian community, particularly in matters concerning marriage, divorce, and other personal status issues. They emphasized the importance of introducing reforms in line with contemporary legal and constitutional principles.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi assured the delegation that he would consult with relevant institutions and representatives of the Christian community and make every possible effort to facilitate reforms aimed at addressing the community’s concerns. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting measures that would help resolve legal issues affecting Christian citizens and strengthen the protection of their rights under the Constitution.
