According to the BBC, Nepal has decided to raise the climbing fee for Mount Everest by 36%. The new fee for aspiring climbers will now be $15,000. This is the first increase in over a decade.
Last year, Nepal’s Supreme Court mandated limiting the number of permits issued to climbers, emphasizing the need for controlled mountaineering.
Out of the world’s 10 highest peaks, eight, including Mount Everest, are located in Nepal. Permit fees contribute significantly to Nepal’s economy, accounting for over 4% of its revenue.
