TAUNTON, England: Pakistan will get the opportunity to test the form and fitness of fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul when they take on Somerset in a warm-up match here at the County Ground on Thursday (today).
Shoaib and Gul will be replacing tainted pace duo Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, who will miss today’s game because of alleged involvement in a ‘spot-fixing’ scandal. Salman Butt, the Pakistan Test captain, will also miss the warm-up match as he is in London, along with Asif and Amir, to meet PCB and ICC officials.

LONDON: Three Pakistan cricketers at the centre of illegal betting allegations are innocent, Pakistan's ambassador to Britain said Thursday after meeting the players.
Pakistan High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan told a scrum of media that Test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif had declared their innocence and vowed to fight the allegations.
"The three players have said that they are extremely disturbed by what has happened in the past week, especially in regard of their alleged involvement in the crime," Hasan told reporters.

SYDNEY: Australian A-League club Gold Coast United have signed Australian international striker Bruce Djite as a replacement for Shane Smeltz, officials said on Thursday.
Djite, 23, who has played for Australia nine times, is returning home after playing for Turkish Super League club Genclerbirligi SK.
Djite, who scored 11 goals in two seasons with Adelaide United in the A-League before he left for Turkey, replaces New Zealand international Smeltz, who is heading the other way to Genclerbirligi.

NEW YORK: Britain's Andy Murray breezed into the second round of the US Open on Wednesday while ninth seed Andy Roddick and Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych made early exits fom the year's last Grand Slam event.
Fourth seed Murray fired eight aces and 37 winners to overwhelm Slovakia's 71st-ranked Lukas Lacko 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, in one hour and 51 minutes in the afternoon heat to book a second-round matchup against Jamaican Dustin Brown.
"I feel like I'm playing well," Murray said. "But I need to try and keep that level up if I want to win the tournament."

The speedy Washington leadoff man charged the mound after a pitch sailed behind him Wednesday night, triggering a bench-clearing brawl during the Florida Marlins' 16-10 win over the Nationals.
"There's nothing good I can say about someone who doesn't play the game the right way and doesn't respect the integrity of the game," said Wes Helms, who drove in five runs for Florida. "We had to show we weren't going to put up with how he was treating us."

MILWAUKEE – Zach Nash was shocked when he discovered he had one too many golf clubs in his bag a couple hours after winning a junior Wisconsin PGA tournament.
But rules are rules, and the 14-year-old from southern Wisconsin made a decision that might surprise some people: He disqualified himself and surrendered his medal.
"I knew right away I couldn't live with myself if I kept this medal, so it was pretty instantaneous," Nash said during a phone interview from his home in Waterford on Wednesday, his first day of high school.

SEATTLE – Nearly two dozen mountaineers and park rangers are searching for the son of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum, who's been missing since a weekend camping trip in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state.
John Arum was expected to arrive home Sunday after climbing Storm King, a rugged mountain peak about a seven-hour drive from Seattle. Family members grew worried when the 49-year-old environmental lawyer and accomplished hiker did not return.

LOS ANGELES – The wife of one of Lance Armstrong's former teammates said Wednesday she has spoken to a federal agent investigating the seven-time Tour de France winner and other cyclists.
Betsy Andreu, the wife of former Armstrong teammate Frankie Andreu, said she has talked with Food and Drug Administration agent Jeff Novitzky about Armstrong, but declined to discuss details. She said in a phone interview that her husband has also talked to the agent.
